Developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, and described as "the art of controlled movements," Pilates improves flexibility, builds strength and develops control and endurance when practiced with consistency.  Pilates teaches body awareness, good posture and easy, graceful movement.  There is an emphasis on alignment, breathing, developing a strong core, and improving coordination and balance.
