EMS Workgroup

Presentation and recommendations of the Fire/EMS workgroup that was comprised of 5 citizens and City Staff.  The workgroup studied current Fire/EMS service delivery and future opportunities with these foundational values: Excellence in Public Service, Responsible Stewardship of Public Resources and Fairness.

The group's finding was presented to the City Council on May 9th, 2016 at the Council's workshop.  A video of the group's full presentation is available online.

BLS (Basic Life Support):
Provision of care, in an emergency setting that is within the BLS (EMT) scope of practice

ALS 1 (Advanced Life Support):
…Provision of care including the provision of an ALS assessment or at least one ALS intervention.

ALS 2 (Advanced Life Support):

…provision of medically necessary supplies and services including:
-At least three separate administrations of one or more medications by intravenous push/bolus…
-or-
Provision of at least one of the ALS2 procedures listed below:
- Manual Defibrillation/cardioversion, Endotracheal Intubation, Central Venous Line, Cardiac Pacing, Chest Decompression, Surgical Airway, Intraosseous line

Basic Life Support care requires medical monitoring by a state certified EMT and may include monitoring, oxygen, IV therapy and a limited amount of medications.  

Advanced Life Support care requires medical monitoring and care by a state certified paramedic and may include monitoring vital signs, advanced drug therapy, cardiac monitoring, oxygen, IV therapy and other advanced procedures, including but not limited to: Manual defibrillation/cardioversion, Endotracheal Intubation, Cardiac Pacing, Chest Decompression and Surgical Airway.
