Small Kennel License

A license is required of any person keeping up to three (3) dogs over the age of 3 months of age on a property zoned farm residential or residential R-1. 
 

Code Requirements


Guidance relating to Small Kennel licenses is contained in the Maplewood City Code, Chapter 10, Article III, Division 6. All license holders are required to be familiar with the provisions of this Chapter and with applicable Minnesota Statutes and federal regulations.  
 

Application Requirements


Review/Inspections

Applications for a Small Kennel license shall be submitted to the City Clerk. Upon receipt of the application, staff will obtain a list of affected properties from GIS identifying properties within 150 feet of the outer boundaries of the applying property.Certified letters shall be sent to the affected property addresses requesting approval or objection to the license. Written consent from 75% of property owners or occupants is required. 

Once the required neighbor consent is obtained, the application shall be forwarded to the Police Department for inspection and final approval. The police chief may refuse a license to keep or maintain dogs under this division for failure to comply with this chapter, if the facilities for the keeping of the dogs are or become inadequate for their purpose, if the conditions of the license are not met, if a nuisance condition is created, or if the public health and safety would be unreasonably endangered by the granting of such license.
 

Expiration/Renewal

License term runs January 1 through December 31, annually.  Renewal must occur on or before date of expiration.
