Investigations & Specialized Services

The Maplewood Police Department Investigations & Specialized Services Division is under the direction of Lieutenant Kerry Crotty. Lieutenant Crotty directs the activities of 6 investigators, 1 property & evidence technician, and 1 investigative case aide.

The investigations & specialized services division handles a wide variety of cases and the associated evidence, ranging from general property crime, complex frauds & forgeries, to all manner of violent crime.

Three of the detectives are assigned general investigations, though each may also have his or her own areas of specialization.

Two detectives focus on juvenile matters, with 1 providing school resource services to those schools located in Maplewood from Independent School Districts 622 and 623. One detective is assigned to special investigations, working on matters not readily addressed through conventional means. Another detective is assigned to the Ramsey County Violent Crime Enforcement Team (VCET), a multi-jurisdictional unit focusing on violent & drug crimes throughout Ramsey County.

The property & evidence technician bears primary responsibility for managing the police department’s evidence room and all of the property which enters into and is released from it. The police department takes in approximately 10,000 pieces of property each year and detailed accounting is required to properly track and manage it.

The investigative case aide acts as a resource to the entire investigations & specialized services division, assembling evidence, gathering and disseminating crime trends & data, and providing support to the various detectives to help them complete their investigations.
