Liquor

The City of Maplewood is authorized to issue the following liquor licenses:  
 
  • 3.2% Malt Liquor - Off Sale
  • 3.2% Malt Liquor - On Sale
  • Club - On Sale
  • Intoxicating Liquor - Off Sale
  • Intoxicating Liquor - On Sale
  • Wine - On Sale

Definitions
For the purpose of liquor licenses, the following is defined:

sm_Liquor
  • 3.2% Malt Liquor
    • Liquor containing not less than one-half of one percent alcohol by volume nor more than 3.2 percent alcohol by weight.
  • Club
    • An incorporated organization organized under the laws of the state for civic, fraternal, social, or business purposes, for intellectual improvement, or for the promotion of sports, or a congressionally chartered veterans' organization, which: 
      • has more than 30 member
      • has owned or rented a building or space in a building for more than one year that is suitable and adequate for the accommodation of its members
      • is directed by a board of directors, executive committee, or other similar body chosen by the members at a meeting held for that purpose. No member, officer, agent, or employee shall receive any profit from the distribution or sale of beverages to the members of the club, or their guests, beyond a reasonable salary or wages fixed and voted each year by the governing body. 
  • Off Sale
    • The sale of alcoholic beverages in original packages for consumption off the licensed premises only. 
  • On Sale
    • The sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption on the licensed premises only.
  • Wine
    • The product made from the normal alcoholic fermentation of grapes, including still wine, sparkling and carbonated wine, wine made from condensed grape must, wine made from other agricultural products than sound, ripe grapes, imitation wine, compounds sold as wine, vermouth, cider, perry and sake, in each instance containing not less than one-half of one percent nor more than 24 percent alcohol by volume for nonindustrial use.

Code Requirements

Guidance relating to Liquor licenses is contained in the Maplewood City Code, Chapter 6. All license holders are required to be familiar with the provisions of this chapter and with applicable Minnesota Statutes and federal regulations.

Expiration/Renewal
License terms runs January 1 through December 31, annually. Renewal must occur on or before date of expiration.

  • Person includes any individual, partnership, association, trust, institution, corporation, or municipality, and includes also a municipal liquor store.
  • Sale, sell, and purchase include all barters, exchanges, gifts, sales, purchases and other means used to obtain or furnish liquor as above described, directly or indirectly, in violation or evasion of this article, but does not include sales by state license liquor wholesalers selling to licensed retailers.
  • 3.2% malt liquor means malt liquor containing not less than 1/2 of 1% of alcohol by volume and no more than 3.2% of alcohol by weight.
