Visitor Center Building Hours Tuesday - Saturday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, closed Mondays
Building Closed Tuesday, May 14th for Staff and Volunteer Training

Visit the nature center to walk the trails, attend a program or event, volunteer, and in the winter, you can rent snowshoes.  

View the interpretive exhibits (fun for kids and interesting for adults) inside the visitor center and outdoors as well.  Children can play on bridges, boulders, stepping stones, and logs in the outdoor natural play area. 

Demonstration Gardens include raingardens, woodland and wildflower prairie butterfly gardens and a small constructed pond with waterfall.  

Learn about Trees and the city's tree rebate.   Enjoy a picnic under the state's largest pin oak at the nature center, take a self-guided tour of the trees on the trail, or learn more about the city's tree rebate program, planting trees, and more.

The Nature Center is a resource, too!  At the visitor center, use our nature library to identify a bird, or browse through the informational handouts to learn more about buckthorn removal and native landscaping.  See our earth machine composting bin, which are for sale at the nature center.


Garden Pollinator Series
BEFRIENDING BUMBLE BEES
Friday July 12, Saturday July 20 and Friday August 2, 10:00 a.m.-Noon
(Rain Date: Tuesday July 30th) For adults and children, 5 and up.
Join the quest for the Rusty-patched bumble bee formerly common in Minnesota. Assist Elaine Evans, Entomologist from the U of MN and co-author of the book, Befriending Bumble Bees, in collecting bumblebees from prairie flowers. The sessions will take place at Jim’s Prairie, a native wet prairie in Maplewood where rare bumblebees were once found in the 1990’s. TASTY TREATS FROM THE BEES
Saturday, July 27th, 9:30-10:45 am
Ages 4-10, families
Taste different kinds of honey, and sample food pollinated by bees such as blueberries and raspberries! Learn about different kinds of bees and why they are important. We’ll do an easy and fun bee-count with the Great Sunflower Project, www.greatsunflowerproject.org, that you can also do later in your backyard or nearby park.

CAPTURING INSECTS THROUGH YOUR CAMERA
Saturday, August 17, 9 am-Noon
Learn the secrets of photographing bugs close-up from expert photographer Bill Johnson. Bring your camera on a ‘bug hunt’ around Maplewood nature center’s native gardens as you learn how to take successful insect photos using your own equipment. Bill Johnson’s insect photography has been published in over 800 publications. He writes the column ‘Insect ID’ for Horticulture Magazine.

Trail Hours
Trail Hours at Nature Center and Preserves is 1/2 hour before Dawn to 1/2 hour after Dusk every day of the year.

Maplewood has 14 beautiful open space sites scattered all around Maplewood, find the one nearest you!

These nature preserves are great sanctuaries and getaways to hike, relax, and enjoy nature.

Our Mission

The Nature Center participates in Sustainability Projects for the City of Maplewood, including Sustainable Maplewood Project 2050, the Environmental Insert for the City's Newsletter and Maplewood's City Staff 'Green Team'.
