The course is designed to introduce residents to the realities of police work. It provides attendees an opportunity to see the challenges and dangers police officers face while protecting their communities.
Citizens participate in classroom discussions regarding the history of law enforcement and the Maplewood Police Department, criminal law, arrest rules, criminal investigation, gangs and drugs. Other topics, such as traffic stops, DWI enforcement, and use of force issues will involve more active participation.
Citizen academy participants are also be afforded the opportunity to do a five-hour “ride-along” with a police officer.
The course is approximately nine weeks long, with classes held during the evening.
The citizen academy is open to anyone who is at least 18 years old and lives or works in Maplewood.
